Today is the first day of school holidays here in Melbourne. This is all new territory for me - eldest child, first year of school, first term break.
I thought that the best way to get through these holidays was have a few ideas up my sleeve. And over the next two weeks, I'm going to share them all with you too. It may not be school holidays in your part of the world, but you might see something you like and and you can bookmark or pin it for later!
There are some criteria for these activities - everything has to be easy, cheap and available at home.
I am going to be posting every week day for the next two weeks - yep everyday, 10 posts in all. Hopefully you will find something fun to do with your kiddos in amongst it all!
Now don't get me wrong, I'm no supermum - my kids get plenty of screen time. These will not be super fancy, pinnable, beautiful and fashionable activities. This will just be everyday stuff, but sometimes it's handy to have a few ideas to fall back on.
As the next couple of weeks go on I will link them up here:
Kids Meal Planning
Chalk Race Track
Biscuit (cookie) Decorating
Sticker Drawings
Sewing Cards
Easter Basket
Paper Plate Hats
Origami
Outdoor Fabric Art
Wine Cork Bunnies
Click through these links and find a bunch of simple ideas that are great activities for kids of all ages! Hope you find something that your children will love doing!
having a plan is always what helps us get through the school holidays (and we have 11 weeks in the American summer!!). This is a great idea Ros - looking forward to seeing what you have come up with :-) Hope its a fun couple of weeks for your family :-)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the holiday! I'm looking forward to your ideas. I babysit three preschoolers in my home while my own three boys are in school, so these ideas will be helpful to me all through the school year.
ReplyDeleteDecorated maries the best stand by, :) have fun on your first term break. My boys are hoping to do three things beat their stupid game, watch the entire series of breaking bad and "make Easter food" (they haven't decided what yet). I'm always stuck for little kid ideas and whatever we do it's basic.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important thing to remember is that school holidays in Australia exist for the benefit of the children. The prevailing philosophy is that children need the rest away from structured time, even if they are 18 years old. The teachers are actually paid during this time and many are working at home or on courses.
ReplyDeleteEncourage the children to devise their own entertainment and to be content with their choices. Tell the children the TV has something wrong with it at least one day and get the little darlings to use their own imagination not someone else's. Have a school friend over to play and then the reverse, but not on days that follow each other. Encourage them to build a temporary cubby. Go to a park with play equipment you could never afford at home. Gather some dress ups, slightly crazy ones. Encourage the children to participate in family life: that actually means give them small household tasks on a regular basis such as food prep and messages. Do some small science experiments. Skate and ride bikes.
Give the children the opportunity to build their own lives and personalities. Tell them you like having them around.
