Open Wide Patchwork Pouches

I've been playing with my scrap basket lately and enjoying a bit of small scale patchwork. I've been meaning to try the Open Wide Zippered Pouch by Anna from Noodlehead for ages, then one day I just did it, then I made another, then another. I might be addicted.

First up I cut some 2.5" squares and made a couple of quilted panels using some aqua and pink scraps. Once I made the panels, I cut the lining to match the panel size and used the Open Wide Zippered Pouch Tutorial from there. So this one is quite a bit smaller than the the dimensions in the tutorial. Doesn't matter though - you could use any rectangular sized panels.

Next up was this one for my friend Jenny, who has just welcomed her new gorgeous baby, Pipi Grace. It's always nice to give a new Mama a gift I think - after all she has done some seriously amazing work to bring that new baby into the world! I sent some patchwork bibs to Pipi and this pouch to Jen. I used this beautiful Agapanthus fabric by Yardage Design that I've had in my stash for ages just waiting for the right project.

And finally yesterday I was itching to do something but it needed to be a small project that I could whip up during Lucy's nap time, so I made this fun patchwork version. Again, loving the pinks and aquas as a colour combo! This was just a random project, I ran out of aqua thread half way through, so my quilting stitches are different colours, and if you look carefully, straight lines are not very apparent! Haha - who cares because I love it!

My friend Catherine has recently sent me some delicious parcels with some lovely scraps inside - these Pam Kitty Morning button panels were from her, as well as the other pink print. All the aquas are left over scraps from a quilt I just finished that will be auctioned for an Ovarian Cancer fundraiser. Pics coming!

I am sure I will make more of these Noodlehead pouches in the future. They are a quick fun project and make great gifts. Have you made one?

  2. Far out Ros, you have made some seriously cute pouches!! I LOVE your fussy cutting for the PKM button cards, they look so great - and the pinks look so good with the aquas! The Yardage Girl Agapanthus fabric is gorgeous, love her designs.

I have a couple of these pouches on my list too, for later this week - one for a pressie and one for me - I really want to make a bigger size to use for my growing-still-not-very-good-at-it crochet habit - big enough to carry a few balls of wool and hooks.

The Noodlehead pattern is great - the thing I find the trickiest is sewing down the ends of the zip to get them out of the way - I need to sew them down, I'm not skilled enough to just pin them and make it work. Catherine x

  3. busy bee! I've had these on my to do list for ages! Want to make a toilet bag and a matching smaller one for makeup. I need to go to Ikea to buy a shower curtain to use for waterproof lining...one day!

  4. These all look absolutely gorgeous, I have one question "do you use padding on the quilted ones"?

    1. Hi Sylvia, yes I use left over pieces of quilt batting. For the quilted ones I make a quilted panel then make it into the pouch. For unquilted ones I add a layer of batting between the exterior and the lining. It makes the pouches nice and sturdy. You could use interfacing as well.

(PS Your photos are so much better than mine - it was an overcast day when I photographed your lovely presents)

  6. They all look fabulous, Ros, but i especially like the last one. I have the fabric on my desk, ready to cut out and make one of the open wide pouches tomorrow. Was going to be today, but it didn't happen.

  12. These are gorgeous Ros :) I haven't tried this pattern out though I bookmarked it aaaggges ago. I think I need to get some decent batting, you use low loft yeah?

    1. Thanks Toni! Yes I think it's low loft. The problem with batting is that it's not cheap, but if you are just sewing pouches and things, polyester would probably be OK. You can often pick up a cot sized batting for $5 at Spotlight. But the cotton batting does sew up a bit better and retain it's shape, although its about $20-25 per metre. I've been using the off cuts from the quilts I've made lately.

  14. These are sooooo cute. They would make cute teacher gifts. We will have quite a few this year (Master 6 has just the one teacher but Miss 4 has three kinder teachers plus two daycare teachers!). I think I might start sewing them soon and putting them away as gifts. So many uses - pencil case, makeup bag, inside a bigger bag - endless!

    Lovely Ros x

  15. Those pouches are super cute. I too have been intending to make this style of wide open pouch to see how I like it... I suspect I will like it a lot and make it my go to style. Really must get to it, every time I see them I want one even more. Your fabrics are so cute and you do a great job of keeping the scraps down by using them up - must do that more often...
