To Market, To Market

This weekend is my first craft market! Strange thing is I actually won't be there...

My Mother in law called me a couple of weeks ago to say that her Church was having a car boot sale and she asked if I would like her and my sister in law to sell some of my items at their stall. Of course I said yes, it is a really great chance to sell off some items I've made that I haven't used for my girls, and  also (hopefully) get my books back in balance! Only problem is that they live in a town two hours drive from here, and I will be busy with my Mum and brother visiting from interstate this weekend, so I've given my Mother in law a big bag of my handmade goodies to sell.

I've given her a variety of things including bibs, appliqued onesies, a couple of pinafores and I also made a stack of lovely hair clips using fabric covered and regular buttons. I used some spare fabric in my stash to make some simple and cute skirts as well.

I just did a basic rectangle skirt with an elasticized waist, and trimmed the hem with bias binding for a pretty contrast. This one is made from a pink bug print that a relative gave me last year when she had a big de-stash.

This one is a love heart cotton print fabric from Ikea. I made really simple price tags by punching a hole in a business card and attaching it using bakers twine and a small safety pin.

I adore this cherry skirt, I think I'll make a couple more for my girls for the upcoming summer. It's made from a cotton drill print from Spotlight. I bought it earlier this year so I am not sure if they still have it in stock, but I will keep my eye out for it, I'd love to get some more. I made two of these, one with a pink bias trim, and this one with the white.

I'm excited to see how the market goes, keep your fingers crossed for me that all my wares will sell out! I'll update you next week. If you live in the Rochester / Echuca region, don't miss the market - this Saturday 25th August at the Rochester Salvation Army!

Do you sell your handmade items at markets? What are your suggestions for market success?

  6. Good luck! I think you're almost better off having someone else sell for you the first time, I was so anxious I re-arranged my stall about a hundred times and it's so hard that first time watching people linger over your items but not buy them ( or worse still, tell you they could do it themselves) but after the first time and realising eventually things DO sell, it's OK.
Also, sometimes you really need to find the right market for your stall.. eg in my town, people go to certain markets expecting cheap, second hand goods, so I never sold much there, but at other 'craft' markets I've done well.. it's hard to know which ones are good or bad until you've been though!

    1. Thanks Kate, great info! I have had other friends also tell me of the horror of the "I could make this myself" comment from people! Horrible! I'm also glad I'm starting at a country town market, some of the Melbourne markets are so professional these days they intimidate me!

  13. Ooooh, gorgeous!!! That cherry skirt would have to be my favourite. I don't have any girls but if I lived closed by, I would totally go to your market stall and buy one for my little niece.
Hope it all goes well tomorrow! x
