Small Nappy (Diaper) Bags

I have always disliked large nappy bags. I don't know why, but I just hated the idea of toting around mountains of baby stuff. So I never used one. Instead, I like to take a couple of nappies, a packet of wipes, some nappy disposal bags, some hand sanitiser and put them in one of these nappy pouches.

I then pop it straight into my handbag, or the car, or throw it in the pram.

Every time a friend of mine has a baby, this is my go to gift. I sew one up using fabric I know that particular friend will love, then I stock it full of all the items I mentioned, and it is a perfect gift. Personally speaking, I found practical baby gifts really great when I had my girls, so I like to give practical gifts in return. Just today I had a friend tell me how much she loved hers and how lots of other Mum's had commented on it. (Yay, that kind of feedback is awesome!)

Over time I have perfected the size to fit two to three nappies and all the other items you need. I also sew in a wristlet loop, so you can sling it around your arm if you are carrying your baby to the parents room or lifting them onto a changing table.

Sometimes I box the corners like in this tutorial for my Baby Gift Zipper Pouch, but these days I think I prefer the simple rectangular pouch design in these pictures.

This one in the Kokka Trefle Elephant fabric is a favourite of mine. I just adore the fabric, such great colours for baby boys, but also lovely for baby girls - sometimes when you have a girl it can be a pink overload, so this fabric with the orange in it is a nice change.

I have a variety of these nappy bags in my shop, so if you are looking for a practical baby shower gift or new baby gift, this might be perfect for you! I can custom make them to your preferred dimensions too - I love custom orders so don't hesitate to contact me!

What is your favourite gift to give new babies?

  1. Oh how cute!! I love them, especially that cute elephant print. These are really a great idea, I have a few babies I am sewing for so I might add one of these to the list :)

  2. They're gorgeous! I have a bundle of the owl fabric sitting here too... half is an almost made kid's apron and the rest is unclaimed. I love the chevron look too, it looks so stylish! :)

  7. Those are perfect! Nobody I know seems to have babies (well it's seldom, next one isn't til October) & it's a tragedy. I think a gift like that and a baby blanket are the ideal gifts for any new child!

  8. I don't have any kids yet, but that's one of the things I've never understood... the diaper bag. Why carry a whole other bag full of baby stuff AND your regular handbag too? What's worse is if the diaper bag has some cartoon character on it... ugh! YOU have to carry the bag, not your baby, so why shouldn't it be stylish? I've already decided that if anyone gets me a "diaper bag" for a baby shower it will promptly be returned. All of my bags are large enough to fit a few baby necessities. Oh, and I love how you say "nappy" and "pram". It sounds so exotic to me here in the US. :)
