Doing My Block

So this quilting thing is really happening. I'm enjoying it. I think the main reason is that each time I finish a pinwheel or a block I feel a sense of accomplishment. Each one is like a little project all on its own. Right now, small projects suit me.

When I discovered the Oz Material Girls 'Do Your Block for a Cause' project, I knew it would be a great project for me. I love doing charitable projects and I love learning new sewing skills. Perfect. Each block will be made into a quilt and donated to someone in need.


I've made two blocks so far - the pattern is a simple one which requires three coordinating fabrics.

The first one is Little Red Riding Hood themed. The feature fabric is a linen cotton blend from Spotlight - a while ago they released a series of this fabric with different nursery rhyme prints. It was a lovely series and I'm pretty sure it sold very quickly. The grey is Bubbles in Cloud from the A Walk in the Woods range by Aneela Hoey for Moda. The outer fabric is a polka dot by Sugar and Spice Textiles.

I made up paper templates for each square needed to make these blocks so now I have a pattern and can cut them out pretty quickly. Once cut, they only take ten minutes to sew together. The hardest part is choosing the three fabrics.

My second block is based around a scrap of Zoology in Sea by Michael Miller fabrics. I also used a white solid and the outer fabric is Full Moon Polka Dots in Slate from the Lotus Range by Amy Butler.

I wish I had some more of this fabric - I really love the colours and it is equally gorgeous for a girl or boy.

Coming up with three coordinates is tricky - I rarely buy fabric bundles from the same range. Do you have a favourite fabric range or combination?
